I started my university studies in mathematical subjects at the University of Oulu (y. 1966) and graduated with a Master of Philosophy majoring in theoretical physics (y. 1972).
During the years 1972-73, I qualified as a subject teacher in mathematics and physics. After that, I left the university to serve for three years as a teacher in mathematical subjects in the upper-secondary school in Kainuu and North Karelia. At the same time, I completed my studies for a licentiate degree in theoretical physics and got the degree of Licentiate in Philosophy in theoretical physics at the University of Oulu (y. 1975).
In 1977, I went back to work at the university and took a position as a lecturer in didactics of mathematics at the Kajaani Department of Teacher Education of the University of Oulu. At the same time, I continued my studies in mathematics to the highest level (laudatur).
After getting the permanent nomination to the lecturer in the didactics of mathematical subjects at the University of Joensuu I moved to Joensuu in 1979. That post was in my name until 1998.
In 1985, I was offered a significant new challenge that changed my career and life. Kontiolahti municipality had decided to develop the use of ICT in education on primary and adult education under the leadership of the University of Joensuu. KONTI project was born and I served as a head of the project during the years 1985-1989. The project subsequently expanded to include all of the Nordic countries, so that it became to form a network of municipalities from all the Northern countries.
In 1989 I got ready for my doctoral dissertation in educational sciences. The title of my thesis was The Use of Computer in School, Thinking and Development of Thinking in Logo Environment. As far as I know, it became to be the first one about educational technology in educational sciences in Finland.
TOTY (Research and Development Centre for Information Technology in Education) was partly built in 1989 in the basement of KONTI project. Professor Erno Lehtinen served as its first director yy. 1988-1993. After that, it was my challenge to lead TOTY during the years 1994-1998. During the years 1988-1998, TOTY became to be nationally and internationally known and valued as a high-level research and development center in educational sciences and as a home for national and international doctoral students whose main research focus was in educational technologies and learning sciences.
During the years 1992-1998 I was working as an acting associate professor in educational science. In 1998 I was appointed to the position of Professor of Educational Science at Savonlinna Department of Teacher Education at the University of Joensuu. From that position I retired in 2010 – some months after the University of Eastern Finland started its function.
